We have a reflex in that if we can’t breathe through our mouth, our sinuses will automatically open. You can try this before going to sleep. Apply the tape and breathe through your nose for about 10 minutes to see if the sinuses open (they will).
Most likely your are breathing through your mouth while you sleep. How are your sinuses? Are they stuffy? See what you can do to get them functioning better. i.e. possible environmental allergies.
Do not tape more than is taped in this image.
I was suffering from morning dry mouth. I saw a physical therapist who told me that when he has had a tiring day, he knows he will end up sleeping with his mouth open. He told me about mouth taping. I didn’t have the proper tape but tried it with cello tape (scotchtape). Interesting that I hadn’t mentioned my problem of mouth breathing through the night. The next morning my mouth was not dry.
You could try taping the front of your lips together. I did this for years and it solved my problem. First you will need a surgical tape that is easy to remove so that if you find you can’t breathe through your mouth, you can easily open your lips and mouth. Only use a very narrow strip and apply it from under your nose towards your chin (vertically). This keeps the sides of your lips free to that air can escape or enter should the need arise. Do. Not. Tape. All. Of. Your. Lips. Together.
